BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (7-9, 3-5 in the Pac-10) was not able to celebrate the opening Haas Pavilion in a victorious manner as Cal fell to Arizona State, 3-1 (15-11, 15-6, 13-15, 15-9), Friday evening. The Bears-Sun Devil volleyball match was the first ever athletic event in the new Haas Pavilion (renovated Harmon Gym) on the Cal campus. The volleyball match was prior to the men's and women's basketball Midnight Madness. The Sun Devils improved to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-10.

The Bears were paced by a team-leading 19 kills and 21 digs from senior outside hitter Brook Coulter. Junior outside hitter Alicia Perry added 14 kills. Arizona State was led 25 kills from junior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge and 24 kills by senior middle blocker Laura Hibsman.

The Bears started the match off playing well in game one, jumping out to a 9-5 lead. Cal let ASU get back in the contest, however, and with match tied, 10-10, the Sun Devils went on to outscore the Bears, 5 to 1 to win 15-11.

From there, Cal lost momentum, losing badly in game two, 15-6. The Bears showed some heart in their new arena by winning game three, 15-13. Cal was down 12-8 late in the third game, but went on a 3-0 run with two kills by Perry to get within 12-11. ASU was able to score one more point before the Bears went on 4-0 run with a kill and a block by freshman outside hitter Leah Young and a kill by Perry to seal the game, 15-13.

Game four was not close as Cal fell behind 7-0 and never really caught up. The Bears did get within, 13-9, on a kill by Coulter, but ASU scored the next two points to win the game and match, 15-9.

Cal will next host No. 18 ranked Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
