Cal Volleyball Dominated by No. 7 Stanford

STANFORD, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (8-11, 3-7 in the Pac-10) was dominated by Stanford, 3-0 (15-2, 15-7, 15-6), Friday evening at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus. The No. 7 ranked Cardinal improved to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in the Pac-10.

The Bears, who had a -.033 hitting percentage for the match, were led by junior outside hitter Alicia Perry and freshman Leah Young with six kills apiece. Senior Brook Coulter and freshman Courtney Guerra added five digs each. Stanford, which totally stifled Cal with its blocking, had a team hitting percentage of .419 and had 29 block assists and 16 total team blocks.

The Bears were dominated in the first game, which only took 14 minutes, 15-2. Cal played considerably better in game two. Down 13-3, the Bears went on a 4-0 run with the help of a kill by Coulter, block assists by Coulter and freshman Courtney Guerra, and a block solo by Coulter to get within, 13-7. That was as close as Cal got, though, losing 15-7.

The Bears got their first lead of the match when they started off game three with a 3-0 lead off of a kill by Perry, a long hit by Stanford and a kill by Guerra. Down 4-1, Stanford came roaring back, going on a 11-0 run to take a 12-4 lead. Cal rallied a little bit when the Cardinal's Logan Tom hit the ball into the net and Leah Young recording a kill to make it 12-6. But that was as close as the Bears would get, losing the game and the match, 15-6.

Cal will next travel to Oregon, Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at McArthur Court in Eugene, and Oregon State, Friday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. The Bears-Beavers match will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
