BERKELEY - Susan Kraeger scored a goal in the 30th minute to lift Duke to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over California today at Edwards Stadium.
The victory, coupled with Blue Devils' Friday win over San Francisco, gave Duke (7-5-0) the Golden Gate Classic tournament title.
Kraeger took a pass from Sherrill Kester above the penalty box and drilled a high shot from 30 yards out that floated over the outstretched arm of Cal goalkeeper Lee Ann Morton.
Cal (7-3-1) was forced to play the game with Morton, a freshman forward who is the emergency, fourth-string goalkeeper, because of a red card to normal starter Maite Zabala in the Bears' previous game. Backups Jill Stephenson and Gabby Ronick are both injured.
Despite the goal, Morton played well, making five saves to keep the Bears close. But Cal couldn't convert on several chances and lost despite outshooting the Blue Devils 11-10.
Duke's defense held Cal leading scorer Laura Schott to only one shot.
The game was Cal's final regular-season non-conference match, as the Bears begin conference play next week on the road at Oregon State (Friday) and Oregon (Sunday).
