STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's soccer team kept its NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a 2-1 overtime upset of seventh-ranked Stanford Friday at New Maloney Field. The Bears handed the Cardinal (13-4, 6-1 Pac-10) its first loss in Pac-10 play, while they improved to 11-6-1 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10. The game was Cal's third-consecutive overtime game against a top 15 Pac-10 opponent and marked the Bears second-consecutive overtime win over the Cardinal.

Regina Holan netted the game-winning goal 10:48 into the first overtime on a free kick from 25-yards out. The shot beat Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak into the upper-right corner of the net. The goal was Holan's sixth of the year and gave her 15 points for the season. Up until this point in the game, Cal junior defender Tami Pivnick handled the free kick duties.

"Reggie has a hammer for a foot," said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. "And, we were close enough to have her take it. If it's farther out, Tami takes it, and Reggie puts it away. I told Reggie to go smack one."

After a scoreless first half, Cal struck first with a goal by Brittany Kirk in the 59th minute with an assist being credited to Laura Schott. The Cardinal rebounded to tie the score at 1-1 when freshman Callie Withers dribbled across the face of the goal before sending the ball into the net.

Cal has put itself back in the NCAA Tournament picture with today's win.

"I think we have a very good chance (to make the tournament)," said Boyd. "We have some big wins under our belt. The teams we have lost to our doing quite well. I think we have a pretty solid shot."

Next week Cal wraps up the regular season at home against Washington State Friday at 3 p.m. and Washington Sunday at noon. Both games are at Edwards Stadium.
