LOS ANGELES, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (7-7, 3-3 in the Pac-10) fell to No. 9 ranked UCLA, 3-0 (15-2, 15-11, 15-7), Friday evening at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus. The Bruins, who are 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the Pac-10, have now won 12 straight matches.
The Bears were led by nine kills and nine digs apiece from senior outside hitter Brook Coulter and junior outside hitter Alicia Perry. Coulter also led Cal with a pair of service aces. UCLA was led by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Bowles with a team-high 11 kills and 12 digs.
Cal struggled in game one, only managing two points in a 15-2 loss. The Bears played much better in game two, rebounding from a 7-1 deficit to get within 11-9 on blocks assists by senior middle blocker Kellie Alva, Coulter and sophomore setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee, and kills by freshman outside hitter Courtney Guerra and Coulter. UCLA then scored the next two points to take a 13-9, but Cal came back again on a kill and a service ace by Coulter to make the game, 14-11. The Bruins were finally able to seal the game, 15-11, when a kill attempt by Perry went long.
The Bears started out game three well, taking an early 4-1 lead on two kills by Coulter, a kill by Alva and a service ace by freshman setter Caity Noonan. UCLA rattled off the next three points to tie the game, 4-4. Cal again took the lead on a service ace by Coulter to make it 5-4. That was the last lead the Bears would have as the Bruins proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage and ended up winning the final game, 15-7.
"For some reason we were intimidated starting this match, we gave UCLA the majority of its points," said Cal coach Rich Feller. "It was good to see us come back in game two and for a short time we were able to go point-for-point and toe-for-toe with them. That was the promising side."
Cal will next travel to No. 17 ranked USC, Saturday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
