BERKELEY - Behind 14 points and eight assists from tournament MVP Mike Jordan, Pennsylvania held off California, 74-71, in the championship game of the Golden Bear Classic Wednesday night in Haas Pavilion.
With the win, Penn improved to 3-4, while Cal fell to 8-3.
In the first half, Cal jumped out to a 30-22 lead with 6:56 left, but Penn rallied with an 11-1 run to take a 33-31 lead with 2:57 to go. The teams entered the locker room tied at 37-37.
After intermission, the Quakers went up 51-43 on a three-pointer by Ugonna Onyekwe. Cal, though, came back for a 57-53 lead on a layup by center Nick Vander Laan.
The teams traded the lead several times down the stretch until Penn went up for good at 67-66 on a pair of Geoff Owens free throws with 5:41 to go. With the Bears down 72-69, another Vander Laan layup brought the Bears to within one point with 2:32 left.
Cal had several opportunities to score in the final two minutes, but couldn't get off a good shot. With about a minute left, Shantay Legans drove the lane, but his shot came up short. He grabbed the rebounds, but the Bears eventually lost the ball on a tie up.
Cal then fouled Penn's David Klatsky, who sank two free throws with 8 seconds to go, and final three-point attempt by Legans missed the mark.
The loss broke Cal's 23-game on-campus winning streak (Harmon Gym and Haas Pavilion) and was their first setback in Berkeley since falling to Washington State, 92-89, on March 11, 1995.
Penn, which shot 70.6 percent from the field in the second half, was led by Matt Langel's 19 points. Langel, who was named to the all-tournament team, sank five three-pointers and added six assists.
Sean Lampley paced Cal with 18 points, while Vander Laan had 14 and Legans 11. Both Lampley and Legans were voted all-tournament.
In the consolation game, Portland State edged Boston University, 62-58.

Post-Game Quotes
California Head Coach Ben Braun ~
"We're disappointed with some plays we made down the stretch. Give Penn credit because they are a veteran team and really worked for an opportunity to win tonight."
"Our guys are worrying now. I want our players to learn from this experience. When you play good defense, you get stops back. We're not going to beat many teams with nine assists. That's not how we've beaten teams this year."
"They did a good job staying patient and making us use the clock, and that's a credit to Penn. It was a great effort on their behalf. Penn is a very well coached team. It's a win for their program and a learning experience for ours."
Pennsylvania Head Coach Fran Dunphy ~
"On defense we talked about keeping the ball away from (Sean) Lampley, but he stepped up and made a lot of shots, and he scored at opportune times in the game."
"In the last minute (David) Klatsky did a good job defending Shantay Legans, Cal has a good team and I thought that our team really stepped up and played a nice game."
"Everyone on our team stepped up and did what they needed to do in order for us to win tonight, we needed everyone to play well to beat Cal and all of our players did that."
