BERKELEY - Cal's freshman duo of Laura Schott and Brittany Kirk combined on a pair of first-half goals Sunday to lift the Bears over Arkansas 2-0 at Edwards Stadium.

The Golden Bears (4-2-1) got on the board at the 37:05 mark when Kirk hit Schott with a pinpoint crossing pass in front of the goal, where she tapped it in for her fifth goal of the season. Schott then returned the favor, feeding Kirk as time wound down in the first half. With the referee shouting out the final seconds, Kirk lofted in a shot from 30 yards out that squeezed between the leaping Arkansas goalie and the crossbar with 2 seconds remaining. It was Kirk's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

"We were really getting what we wanted in the first half," said Cal coach Kevin Boyd, whose Bears outshot Arkansas 14-3 in the opening 45 minutes. "We were creating a lot of chances inside the 8-yard box."

Arkansas (2-5-0) fought tough in the second half, playing even in the shot category at 4-4, but Maite Zabala made two leaping saves of free kicks to post the shutout. It was the junior's 13th career shutout, putting her one behind Noreen Paris for third place all-time in that category at Cal.

The Bears hit the road to North Carolina for their longest trip of the season next week to face New Mexico on Friday and UNC Greensboro on Sunday in the UNC Greensboro Tournament.
