BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California women's volleyball team (4-4, 1-2 in Pac-10) fell to the talented No. 7 ranked Stanford Cardinal, 3-1 (15-5, 11-15, 15-4, 15-7) Tuesday evening at the Recreational Sports Facility on the Cal campus. Cal's win in the second game of the match (15-11) was the first time the Bears had won a game, during a match, against the Cardinal since Oct. 4, 1996 at Stanford. The Cardinal improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10.

Stanford was led by 20 kills and 15 digs from freshman standout Logan Tom. Senior Kerri Walsh was also outstanding for the Cardinal with 18 kills (18 kills, three errors, 30 attempts, .500 hitting percentage) and 14 digs. Cal was led by junior Alicia Perry and Brook Coulter with 18 and 17 digs, respectively. Perry and Coulter each had 14 digs, as well.

"At this stage of the season, and where are program is right now, to play as tough as we did against Stanford is tremendous," said Cal head coach Rich Feller. "To lose the first game the way we did (15-5) and then be able to comeback, point-by-point in game two, showed a lot. This gives us confidence that we can play with BYU on Friday (at the Pac-10-Best West Challenge at Stanford). This match showed we are able to play against big teams like Stanford and teams of Stanford caliber. We just need to stay aggressive all through a match and know that our game plan is right."

Cal will next travel to Stanford for the Pac-10-Mountain West Challenge Sept. 24-25 at Maples Pavilion. The Bears will play No. 12 ranked BYU on Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. and Utah on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.
