MORAGA, Calif. - The California men's soccer team opened the St. Mary's Fall Classic with a 2-0 shutout of host St. Mary's Friday afternoon. The Golden Bears improve to 5-1-1, 0-0-1 in the MPSF and are off to their best start since opening with the same record in 1997. St. Mary's falls to 1-7, 0-0 WCC.
"We're thrilled to win another game with a shutout this year," said Cal head coach Mark Mallon. "We look forward to playing San Diego on Sunday. They're ranked 14th in the nation and third in the region. It should prove to be a great match."
Senior midfielder John Macdonald, who sat out Cal's last game against Michigan State with a sprained ankle, put the Bears on the board in the fourth minute with a rebound goal. Macdonald's first goal of the year was assisted by Kendall Simmonds, who took the initial shot, which St. Mary's goalkeeper Steve Reardon mishandled.
Senior midfielder Karl Henrich gave Cal an insurance goal in the 21st minute with Simmonds getting credit for his second assist of the game. The goal was Henrich's first collegiate goal.
In the second half, Mallon played many of his reserves to give them more experience. Overall, Mallon played 17 players. Of note, redshirt sophomore defender Gene Lee saw his first action of the year after recovering from shoulder surgery.
Cal senior goalkeeper Doug Brooks made three saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the year and his 19.5 of his career. His goals against average is an outstanding 0.39.
Cal next faces No. 14 San Diego Sunday at 11 a.m., at the St. Mary's tournament. San Diego defeated Notre Dame today, 3-0.
