GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Kim Brown drilled a goal from 15 yards out in the 37th minute Friday to lift the Cal women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico at the adidas/Spartan Classic at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The goal was Brown's first of the season and put Cal up 2-0. Freshman Laura Schott, who assisted on Brown's goal, tallied the game's first goal when she beat Lobo goalkeeper Shelly Hammock one-on-one in the 25th minute to score unassisted. Schott is now Cal's leading scorer with six goals and four assists.

Despite the close score, Cal's dominance showed on the stat sheet as the Bears (5-2-1) outshot the Lobos (3-5-1) by a 14-2 margin.

New Mexico's Lara Melendres prevented the shutout when she chipped the ball into an open net in the 50th minute.

In the tournament's second game, 25th-ranked William & Mary shut out host UNC-Greensboro 2-0. Cal will take on UNCG (5-5-0) Sunday at 10 a.m. PDT.
