GREENSBORO, N.C. - The California women's soccer team set a school record Sunday by holding North Carolina-Greensboro to zero shots in a 4-0 win at the adidas/Spartan Classic. The Bears (6-2-1), who outshot the Spartans 12-0, got goals from four different players to extend their winning streak to three games.
Cal got on the board only 1:55 into the game when Stephanie Strocco scored her second goal of the season, heading in a crossing pass from Natalie Stuhlmueller. The Bears extended the lead at the 9:12 mark when leading scorer Laura Schott netted her seventh goal of the season on a breakaway. With 18 points, Schott now has as many points as last year's leading scorer, Kyla Sabo, netted in '98.
The Bears extended the lead at 28:59 on freshman Krysti Whalen's first career goal, before senior Kim Brown closed out the scoring at 39:20. Freshman midfielder Brittany Kirk assisted on the last two goals.
Goalkeeper Maite Zabala notched her second win in a row without making a single save. The shutout gave Zabala 14 for her career, tying her for 3rd place on the Cal career list with Noreen Paris (1985-88).
Cal returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. against Tennessee at Edwards Stadium in the Golden Gate Classic. The Bears then host No. 19 Duke on Sunday at 1 p.m.
