BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (5-6) broke a four-match losing streak with an impressive 3-0 victory (15-7, 15-12, 15-13) over Santa Clara (9-4) Tuesday evening at the Recreational Sports Facility on the Cal campus.

"For us to defeat a Santa Clara team that had won four of the last six matches, and to pretty much dominate in certain areas, is a great boost to our program," said Cal coach Rich Feller. "To have 14 team blocks to their (Santa Clara) one is fantastic. It was good to see us play that steady. We also utilized a 6-2 offense for the first time this season, which allows us to spread our offense more. This is an exciting time for Cal."

Junior Alicia Perry led the Bears with 14 kills, and senior outside hitter Brook Coulter added 11 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Laura Raybould led Santa Clara with 14 kills.

Cal was never threatened in the first game, winning 15-7. In game two, Santa Clara had tied the match, 12-12, before the Bears went on a 3-0 rally behind a kill by sophomore Candace McNamee and a kill by Perry helped Cal win 15-12. The Bears fell behind, 8-2, in game three, but was able to tie the game with an impressive 6-0 run. The contest then went back and forth until Cal broke away for the last three points on a tip by McNamee and kills by junior Kelly Meyer and Perry for the 15-13 victory. Meyer tied a career-high with seven block assists for the Bears.

Cal will next return to Pac-10 play Friday, Oct. 1 versus Oregon and Saturday, Oct. 2 versus Oregon State. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. at Cal's RSF.
