LIVERMORE, Calif. - The Cal women's soccer team proved Saturday night that it deserves consideration as one of the elite teams in the nation, knocking off 10th-ranked William & Mary 2-1 at the Cal Invitational.
The Golden Bears (2-1-0) got their scores from a pair of freshmen, Brittany Kirk and Laura Schott. Schott's game-winning score came at 76:30, just 30 seconds after William & Mary's Jordan Krieger had tied the game. Following Krieger's goal, Cal worked the ball into the penalty box, where Stephanie Strocco's attempt caromed off the crossbar and right to Schott, who found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Cal had taken a 1-0 halftime lead on Kirk's goal in the 21st minute, her fifth tally of the year. Stacey Mallison fed a long pass from midfield, and Kirk found the corner of the Tribe net.
"It's a great win for us to beat anybody ranked in the Top 10," Cal coach Kevin Boyd said. "William & Mary is a team that gets a lot of respect nationally, and especially on the East coast. This win for us tonight says a lot about the quality of West coast soccer."
The Bears controlled the action, outshooting the Tribe 25-10, and forcing William & Mary goalkeeper Michelle Horbaly to make seven saves, several of the spectacular variety. Cal also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Tribe fell to 1-2-0, with their other loss coming to nationally ranked Clemson.
"I felt we not only beat them, we dominated them," Boyd said.
In the first game of the tournament's doubleheader Saturday, No. 13 San Diego State stopped George Washington 2-0, behind goals from Elicia Petre and Megan Mattes.
Cal's next game is Sunday, when it takes on San Diego State at 7 p.m. in the final game of the tournament. That game will be preceded by William & Mary vs. George Washington at 5 p.m.
