Cal Women's Soccer Wins Tournament in Dramatic Fashion

Sept. 5, 1999

LIVERMORE, Calif. - Stacey Mallison's goal with four minutes left in the second overtime Sunday night gave the Cal women's soccer team its second win over a ranked opponent in as many nights, as well as the title of its own tournament, the Cal Invitational.

The Bears (3-1-0) fought evenly with the 13th-ranked Aztecs (3-1-0) for most of the game, but started to control the play in the second overtime. After several good chances were thwarted by SDSU, Cal freshman Laura Schott served a shot from about 25 yards in front of the goal, and Mallison volleyed it into the net, setting off a Golden Bear celebration on the field at Robertson Sports Park.

"It's a tribute to the team when they're that tired, and they can still step up in overtime and dominate enough to win the game," said Cal coach Kevin Boyd, whose team's only loss came at the hands of No. 1 Santa Clara.

Cal junior goalkeeper Maite Zabala played all 116 minutes, notching four saves and intercepting numerous crossing attempts by the Azetcs. It was Zabala's first shutout of the year and the 12th of her Cal career.

Golden Bear midfielder Natalie Stuhlmueller was named the tournament MVP, despite not tallying a point Sunday, or Saturday in Cal's 2-1 win over No. 10 William & Mary.

In Sunday's other game, William & Mary (2-2-0) beat George Washington (0-4-0) 5-1 behind goals from Avery Willis, Jordan Krieger (2), Missy Wycinsky, and Danielle Scalzo. William & Mary was the tournament runner-up by virtue of goal differential. GW's goal, its first of the season, was scored by Katy McQuillin.

Cal's next game is Friday at Pepperdine at 3 p.m.
