STANFORD, Calif. - California's Shavaki Jackson and Kenya Corley posted 15 points each in an 83-57 loss to No. 25 Stanford Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The Golden Bears fall to 5-10, 0-5 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal improved to 11-4, 4-1 in the Pac-10.
The Bears showed some resiliency as they fell behind 22-3 with 10:35 to play as the Cardinal drained three of their six three pointers in the game during the opening run, including two from freshman guard Jamie Carey. Cal then held Stanford scoreless over the next 4:02 as it put on a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-15. The run was keyed by five points from Corley, but that was as close as Cal would get the rest of the game. The Cardinal finished the half with a 21-5 run and entered the locker room with a 43-20 edge.
"I felt pleased (the way we fought back) after they got up by such a great margin initially," said Cal head coach Marianne Stanley. "I was concerned about our players just totally losing their composure and not having the resiliency to get back into it. I was really pleased with the run they put together and the shot selection. Once that run ended, we made a couple of mistakes, which they converted. One of the things Stanford did well tonight was when we made errors, they turned them into points."
While Stanford mounted a lead as big as 32 points in the second half at 70-38, Cal continued to fight and claw to keep the game competitive. The Cardinal only held a 40-37 scoring advantage in the second half.
Junior forward Lauren Ashbaugh added 10 points for Cal. Jackson also held Cal team-high honors with eight rebounds. Stanford's Lindsey Yamasaki led all scorers with 17 points off the bench. Adding to the Cardinal's balanced effort was Milena Flores with 12 points and eight assists, Bethany Donaphin and Carolyn Moos with 11 and Carey with 10.
Some positive notes include the Bears committing 20 turnovers, while force the Cardinal into 24. Keying the Bears pressure, especially in the first half while Pac-10 defensive guru Courtney Johnson was on the bench was freshman forward Amber White. White recorded a career high three blocks and a steal. The Bears also got to the line 25 times (made 17), which is the most since the Dec. 19 Florida game.
Cal looks to break an eight-game losing streak next week on the road in the state of Washington. Thursday, Jan. 27, Cal plays at Washington State at 7 p.m., before facing Washington, Saturday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m.
