Field Hockey Blanks Penn

Oct. 16, 2000

BERKELEY - The Cal field hockey team came out surprisingly strong and maintained an early one-goal lead to shut out Pennsylvania, 1-0, in a Monday matinee at Kleeberger Field.

California (8-4, 4-0 in the NorPac) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 25:37 of the first half then relied on its defense and goaltending to do the rest.

Junior forward Amber Stockstill, who scored 10 goals last year, recorded her first score this season when she pushed in a cross from Lisa D'Anjou for the game-winner.

The Quakers (2-9, 0-3 in the Ivy) and the Bears combined for 11 penalty corners for the game with Cal attempting seven. The Bears struggled to connect on many of the corners due to miscues not typical of the conference leading squad.

Senior goalkeeper, Sarah Hoehn, made some key saves that kept the Bears in the lead. With 13:45 to go in the first half, Hoehn had already made four saves on some crafty shots by Penn.

The Quakers came out strong in the second half, playing with more aggression, but the Bears withstood the attack and held on for the remaining 35 minutes of play.

"I have to give Penn credit for stepping up," coach Shellie Onstead explained. "They (Penn) came out fired up in the second half. For some reason, we were having a hard time using our center half and that's sort of a big part of our game. We got a little bit panicky there at the end."

Cal prepares for its fourth game of a season-ending five-game homestand when the Bears take on Davidson for their last conference game at 1 p.m., Oct. 22, at Kleeberger Field.
