The California Golden Bears shocked another ranked opponent in the 2000 season. The Bears defeated the No. 3 ranked Indiana Hoosiers, 2-1, as part of the Cal adidas-Legacy Classic. With the win, the Bears improve to 6-11-1, while the Hoosiers drop to 13-5-0, after also being defeated by Stanford a day earlier, 1-0 in overtime.
The Bears jumped out to with the early lead at the 25:03 mark. Kendall Simmonds took a breakaway pass from Austin Ripmaster to place a ball to the near side past a diving Hoosier keeper T.J. Hannig.
Just over a minute and a half later, the Bears went up 2-0. Robbie Aylesworth headed a cross from Chris Roner to the far side.
The Hoosiers cut the lead in half early in the second half. Pat Noonan shot from 10 yards out and placed it just over a diving Marco Palmieri and into the net for the Hoosiers lone goal in the match.
The game would end in a flurry of Hoosier shots in the last 1:30, but the Bears defense would not allow Indiana to tie the game.
"I think this is another historical win for our program," said first year head coach Kevin Grimes. "Beating UCLA earlier and now Indiana shows tremendous dedication and heart from this team. Although the playoffs are out of reach, we are playing like a playoff team."
Palmieri notched seven saves on the day, while Hannig saved one Bear shot.
The win was extra sweet as this marked the annual senior day festivities. Simmonds, Ramiro Arredondo, Juan Luis Romero and Palmieri were honored at the beginning of the match.
The Bears play their final home match of the season this Friday when they host Washington at 1:30 p.m., followed by a trip to Los Angeles when they take on UCLA on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap-up the 2000 season.
