TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman catcher Courtney Scott hit a solo home run in the second inning and sophomore pitcher Jocelyn Forest tossed a four-hitter as California defeated host Florida State in the first game of the Seminole Classic Friday night.
The Bears improved to 4-0 on the year, while FSU dropped to 3-1.
Scott, who belted the first homer of her career, hit a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence. Cal had a chance to added to its lead in the fifth inning, when the Bears loaded the bases with one out. However, both Pauline Duenas and Candace Harper grounded out to end the threat.
Florida State's best chance to score came in the seventh inning. Kelly Miller and Andi Lyons singled with two out. But Forest got pitcher Jen White-Stokes to strike out to end the game.
Cal continues play in the Seminole Classic against Florida Atlantic and Florida A&M Saturday night.
