No. 12 Softball Ties Best Start Ever

LAS VEGAS - The 12th-ranked Cal softball team won two more games at the UNLV Softball Classic Saturday to improve to 12-0 on the year, matching the best start in school history.

The Bears began the day by beating Portland State, 7-1. Cal then came back to down Virginia, 6-1.

The Bears also started 12-0 in both 1981 and '82, and they'll go for the record against host UNLV Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Against Portland State, freshman first baseman Veronica Nelson hit a two-run homer and sophomore Candace Harper socked a solo home run to key the offense. Freshman Jennifer Deering won her second game of the year with a three-hitter.

In the second game, sophomore Nicole DiSalvio improved to 3-0 with a five-hitter. Outfielder Pauline Duenas provided the key hit with an RBI triple.
