BERKELEY - Starting out the 2000 season just as it hoped to, California rolled over visiting Regis College 15-0 Sunday afternoon at Kleeberger Field. Sophomore midfielder Laura Kado stepped-up with a breakout four goal performance for the Bears while sophomore attacker Halsey Monger was busy contributing four assists to the effort.
California (1-0 overall, 0-0 in the WWLL) jumped out to the early lead on Kado's first goal of the day just 3:41 into the game. Just 50 seconds later, freshman attacker Britni Must notched her first collegiate goal off an assist from junior midfielder Sarah Wheatley, adding to that her second goal a mere 1:01 later, pushing the Cal lead up to 3-0 with 24:27 remaining in the first half.
"I was really impressed with the whole team," said California head coach Jill Malko. "The freshmen stepped-up and filled the holes we needed them to fill."
Six of the Bears' 15 goals on the afternoon were scored by freshmen, including Must's two goals, midfielder Caroline Anderson's two, and midfielder Laura Forrest adding two with an additional assist to her credit on junior midfielder Joelle LeMoult's goal with 20:39 remaining in the first stanza, increasing the Cal lead to 4-0.
"I felt we played to a high level the entire game," said Malko. "We played our game, and I wasn't sure if we could do that this early in the season."
For Cal's freshman goalkeeper Eden Coelho, the hardest part of her college debut was just staying alert. Regis never got a shot off, due in great part to tremendous defensive performances in the low-midfield and backfield. California's stifling ball control and consistent offensive push led to an 11-0 halftime advantage for the Bears.
"I really felt this would be Laura Kado's breakout year," said Malko. "She's by far the best cutter on the team. She gets open and free better than anyone."
California returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 26th at Stanford for a night game set for 7 p.m.
"There are lots of things that we have to work on this week," said Malko. "I think we're going to come out of this win with a lot of confidence in our attack, and that will help."
