SAN JOSE - Cal got the 2000 softball season to a strong start with a 3-0 shutout of Sacramento State Friday afternoon at the San Jose State Early Bird Tournament.

The Bears and Hornets battled through a scoreless fourth innings before Cal broke on top with two runs in the fifth. Second baseman Lisa Iancin and first baseman Veronica Nelson both walked. After Kristi Robles entered as a pinch runner for Nelson, third baseman Candace Harper doubled them both home with a liner into the left field corner.

The Bears added an insurance run in the sixth. Catcher Courtney Scott walked, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by left fielder Pauline Duenas.

Sophomore Jocelyn Forest tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for the win.
