SAN JOSE - Freshman first baseman Veronica Nelson drove in five runs with a grand slam and a bases-loaded walk to lead California to a 7-0 win over BYU Saturday.

The Bears finished with Early Bird Tournament with a 3-0.

Cal and BYU were tied at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bears erupted for six runs, all with two out. Singles by Courtney Scott and Pauline Duenas and a walk to Jennifer Deering loaded the bases for Nelson, who hit her second home run of the year over the center field fence. Pitcher Jocelyn Forest later drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single.

Cal completed the scoring in the sixth inning when Nelson walked with the bases loaded.

Forest, who improved to 2-0, allowed just one hit and struck out eight.
