Box Score
SACRAMENTO - Sophomore pitcher Jocelyn Forest tossed a six-hit shutout and struck out eight batters to lead fifth-ranked Cal to a 3-0 victory over No. 23 Oregon and the championship of the Capital Classic Sunday afternoon.
For the Bears, who improved to 34-4 on the year, the title was their fifth tournament crown this season. In addition to the Capital Classic, Cal has either won or tied for first at the Early Bird Tournament in San Jose, the Seminole Classic in Florida, the UNLV Softball Classic in Las Vegas and the Easton Showcase Tournament in Fullerton.
Cal began the day with a 1-0 semifinal win over Wisconsin. Freshman first baseman Veronica Nelson drove home the only run with an RBI single in the third inning. Junior right-hander Nicole DiSalvio went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out four to improve to 11-2 on the year.
Against Oregon, the Bears scored twice in the first inning without the benefit of a base hit. A hit batter, following by three consecutive walks pushed across one run. Shortstop Eryn Manahan then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for another score.
Cal added an insurance run in the fifth inning. The Bears loaded the bases on a walk and two singles and scored on a fielding error by Oregon shortstop Holly Ray.
Forest upped her mark to 15-2 with the victory.
