SACRAMENTO - The fifth-ranked Cal softball team advanced to the semifinals of the Capital Classic Saturday by beating San Jose State, 3-0, and Utah, 2-1.

The Bears will face Wisconsin in one semifinal Sunday morning, while Oregon will play host Sacramento State in the other semi. The winners will compete for the tournament championship at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Against San Jose State, Cal got all its offense in the fourth inning when freshman shortstop Eryn Manahan hit a three-run homer. Pitcher Nicole DiSalvio shut out the Spartans on four hits and struck out eight to improve to 10-2 on the year.

The Bears then edged Utah, 2-1, in nine innings later in the day. Both Cal pitcher Jocelyn Forest and Utah starter Kristin Arbogast had no-hitters through seven innings. Cal scored twice in the ninth inning on RBI singles by Lisa Iancin and Candace Harper.

Utah came back with one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Forest struck out Molly McLean to end the game with runners on second and third. Forest finished with a two-hitter and struck out 12.
