BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's Dawn Will scored five
goals and assisted on another to lead the Hokies to a 19-5 victory over
California at Rector Fieldhouse today.
California took the early 1-0 lead when Laura Forrest scored
unassisted at 29:05 in the first half. Tech exploded for 13 first-half
goals, taking a 13-1 lead at halftime. Will scored four goals, Kate Bjorke
scored two goals, Karen Diacont scored twice, Courtney Hubbard, Katie
Madden, Jane Poole, Sam Sybert, Lisa Tsimbidis, each added a goal to lead
the Hokies' first-half scoring.
The Golden Bears scored early in the second half when Sarah
Wheatley scored from a Carrie Scribner assist for their second goal of the
match. Tech extended its lead to 16-2 on goals from Will, Hubbard and
Madden. Both teams scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of play to
provide the final outcome. Kellyn Hentz scored twice and Katie Trevisan
scored once to round out the Hokies' scoring.
Stacey Rainbolt played 35 minutes, finishing with seven saves.
Lauren DeSomma played the final 25 minutes and finished with two saves.
Golden Bear goalie Eden Coelho played the entire match and finished with 22
saves.
Tech outshot Cal, 47-23 and finished with 27 ground balls, 15 draw
controls and caused eight turnovers.
Cal is 5-4 on the season.
