BERKELEY -
Pacific continued its mastery of California in softball Wednesday, sweeping the fourth-ranked Bears, 3-2 and 4-1. The Tigers have won seven consecutive games in the series between the schools.
Cal fell to 37-7 overall, while Pacific is now 15-15.
In the first game, Estee Okumura hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning off Cal starter Jocelyn Forest to break a scoreless tie. The Bears threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with none out on two singles and a walk. But Cal could not get the ball out of the infield against UOP pitcher Liz Niadna and had to settle for one run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cal again had a chance to tie or take the lead, this time getting the first two runners on base. However, the Bears pushed across one run on a ground out, and senior second baseman Lisa Iancin grounded to third to end the game.
In the nightcap, the Tigers jumped on Cal starter Nicole DiSalvio for a run in the first inning. Leadoff batter Tiffany Whipple singled, went to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
Pacific extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, although Cal answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Kristen Morley. The Tigers clinched the game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
