Fourth-ranked Cal and third-rated UCLA battled to a scoreless draw through four innings before the Bruins took control and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Bears Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.
UCLA (26-5, 1-0) scored once in both the fifth and sixth innings, then erupted for four runs in the seventh to put the game away.
In the fifth, Bruin pitcher Amanda Freed walked with two outs and came home to score on a triple to right by Natasha Watley. UCLA added another run in the sixth inning on three singles, with the key hit being an RBI hit to right by Toria Auelua.
In the top of the seven inning, the Bruins took advantage of tiring Cal pitcher Jocelyn Forest. After plating two runs on a single by Lyndsey Klein, UCLA catcher Julie Marshall hit a two-run blast to left center field for a 6-0 lead.
Cal (37-8, 1-2) tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on a single and two walks. Amber Phillips then drew another walk to force in a run, but Paige Bowie struck out to end the game.
Freed completed the game with a four-hitter, striking out eight, to improve to 12-2 on the year. Forest fell to 17-4.
