BERKELEY -
Cal sophomore Jocelyn Forest pitched in and out of trouble all day, but she still managed to shut out the No. 1 team in the country, leading the fourth-ranked Golden Bears to a 2-0 win over Washington Saturday on Levine-Fricke Field.
With the win, Cal snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 38-8 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10. Washington fell to 37-4 and 1-1.
The Bears scored both of their runs in the third inning. With one out, second baseman Lisa Iancin doubled and first baseman Veronica Nelson received an intentional walk. Third baseman Candace Harper followed with an RBI double, and shortstop Eryn Manahan added a run-scoring single.
Forest, who upped her record to 18-4 on the year, made that rally stand up. Despite allowing six hits, hitting five batters and walking two, she seemed to get the key out every time she needed it. The Huskies left 10 runners on base and also hit into a pair of double plays. They got the leadoff hitter on five times in seven innings, but they also stranded at least two runners in an inning four times.
Washington's final opportunity came in the seventh when the Huskies put runners on first and third with two outs. However, Forest induced leading hitter Jenny Topping to bounce to Nelson at first to end the game.
"I was proud of the way we came out today," said Cal head coach Diane Ninemire. "Jocelyn didn't throw a great game, but she kept her composure and got out of several difficult situations. I hope this win will help our confidence. To defeat the No. 1 team in the country means we can beat anyone. We just have to be ready to play mentally."
Cal returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday, when the Bears and Huskies complete their two-game series.
