Lacrosse Rolls Through UC Santa Cruz With 16-0 Victory

April 16, 2000

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Following its sensational 10-6 upset victory over previously undefeated UC Davis at home Saturday, California traveled south to UC Santa Cruz, capturing a 16-0 win over the Banana Slugs Sunday afternoon on the Lower East Field. Junior attacker Chelsea Mao and junior midfielder Sarah Wheatley each scored three goals in the contest for the Bears.

California (10-5 overall, 4-2 in the WWLL) used its opportunity Sunday against Santa Cruz (1-9 overall, 0-5 in the WWLL) to clear the bench and allow some of those players still drained from Saturday's match to sit back and watch what some of their fellow teammates could do on the grass. And what a performance those Bears put on, proving that just because they haven't seen a lot of minutes this season doesn't mean they aren't yet capable of playing at the collegiate level.

Freshman attacker Kelly Moss started things off for this group with her fourth goal of the season with 9:28 remaining in the first half, advancing the California lead to 7-0 as the Golden Bear starters began to give way to their teammates. The half would end on two goals by Mao to hand the Bears a 10-0 lead going into halftime. Mao's second half-opening goal pushed her season total out to seven.

California returns to action this Saturday, April 22nd, when it host cross-bay rival Stanford in the Bears final home game of the season. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.
