Washington Beats No. 4 Cal Softball, 10-1
April 2, 2000
Box Score
BERKELEY -
Top-ranked Washington exploded for nine runs in the first two innings and went on to cruise to a 10-1 victory over No. 4 Cal Sunday on Levine-Fricke Field.
With the win, Washington gained a split in the two-game series and improved its record to 38-4 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal fell to 38-9 and 2-3.
In the first inning, the Huskies pushed across four runs despite getting just one ball out of the infield. Leadoff batter Rosie Leutzinger was hit by a pitch, Kelly Hauxhurst reached on an infield single and Kim DePaul walked to load the bases. The Bears replaced starter Jocelyn Forest with Nicole DiSalvio at that point, but DiSalvio walked Jenny Topping to force in the first run. A ground out brought home another score, and Melissa Downs completed the rally with a two-run double.
Washington added five runs in the second inning, keyed by back-to-back home runs from Jaime Clark and Jennifer Spediacci.
Cal got its only hit in the bottom of the second when shortstop Eryn Manahan homered to left field, her fourth blast of the year.
The game was called after five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule.
