Box Score
TUCSON, Ariz. -
Second-ranked Arizona, which came into the game batting .363 as a team, pounded out 11 hits en route to a 4-1 victory over No. 7 California Friday night.
With the win, Arizona climbed to 41-3 overall and 5-0 in the Pac-10, while the Bears fell to 38-10 and 2-4.
Cal broke on top, 1-0, in the third inning. Center fielder Amber Phillips led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Pauline Duenas. Designated player Kristen Morley followed with an RBI single down the left field line to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Arizona struck back in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs. Lindsey Collins walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by Chrissy Gil. Nicole Giordano then doubled in Gil for a 2-0 UA advantage. At that point, Nicole DiSalvio relieved Cal starter Jocelyn Forest, but the Wildcats added to their lead when Katie Swan greeted DiSalvio with an RBI single.
Arizona completed its scoring in the sixth on a walk to Lindsay Robinson and a run-scoring double to right field by Toni Mascarenas.
The Bears managed six hits on the night against Arizona starter Becky Lemke, but never got more than one hit in any inning and left eight runners on base. Cal also played without starting right fielder Paige Bowie, who was in Chicago at a WNBA tryout camp. Bowie will return to the team next weekend.
Cal returns to action Saturday when the Bears visit No. 4 Arizona State at 6 p.m. in Tempe.
