No Rhyme In Visiting Poets' 14-0 Loss To The Bears

April 8, 2000

BERKELEY, Calif. - California was all over visiting Whittier College Saturday afternoon, downing the Poets 14-0 inside Memorial Stadium. Junior midfielder Joelle LeMoult's three goals led a pack of eight Bears who scored during the contest.

Spreading their scoring opportunities throughout the match, the Bears were able to record an even seven goals a stanza while outshooting the Poets 43-6. The win was California's (8-5 overall, 2-2 in the WWLL) third shutout victory this season.

"I felt like we were doing a lot of the right things offensively in the first half but just weren't making the shots," said California head coach Jill Malko. "I think we were doing everything that we needed to do but weren't getting it into the cage when it came down to it."

Freshman midfielder Jessie Liu paced a group of four Bears scoring twice against Whittier, scoring back-to-back goals with 3:24 and 1:56 remaining in the first half off assists from freshman midfielder Laura Forrest and junior midfielder Sarah Wheatley, respectively. The goals were Liu's fourth and fifth of the season. Wheatley, junior attacker Chelsea Mao and sophomore attacker Halsey Monger each also tallied two goals in the day's work.

"Jessie had her break-through kind of game," said Malko. "She's been struggling and tentative, but she and I both knew it was time to take it to the cage. When Jessie was at center today, it was 100 percent control on those draws. I was happy to see her make that break."

Absent from the field was California's leading scorer, sophomore midfielder Laura Kado, who sat out the game due to some restrictive foot pain. Kado is expected to be recovered and playing in time for next weekend's league match-up against UC Davis at 2 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.

"We were just being careful," said Malko of her decision to hold Kado in reserve against Whittier. "There was no need to play her today, especially with Davis coming down next week."
