Box Score
TEMPE, Ariz. - On the night when Arizona State dedicated its new
Stadium, the Alberta B. Farrington Stadium, the fourth-ranked Arizona State
softball team (36-7, 4-2 Pac-10) shutout seventh-ranked California (38-11,
2-5 Pac-10), 1-0, tonight in Pac-10 action.
Despite being out-hit, 6-2, and hitting into three double plays,
Arizona State only needed a Kara Brun solo home run to win the pitcher's
dual.
Sophomore Erica Beach (12-4) pitched six scoreless innings before
being relieved in the seventh by Kirsten Voak. Beach pitched herself out
of trouble several times during the game, including the third and fifth
innings. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Beach struck out Candice
Harper to leave California scoreless. In the seventh, Voak came in to
tally the save, her first of the season, allowing no hits and striking out
one.
Arizona State scored the lone run in the second inning when short
stop Kara Brun hit a home run over the center field wall. The homer
continued Brun's nine-game hitting streak. It was also Brun's third home
run in as many games, tying her with Beach for the team-high with seven.
The other hit for the Devils was by catcher Sara Kahler who singled to
center field.
The Bears were led at the plate by designated hitter Kristen Morley
who went 2-for-4 on the night. Even though California loaded the bases in
two different innings, they could not plate a run, leaving a total of 11
players stranded on the bases. Cal's Nicole DiSalvio (12-5) pitched all
seven innings and finished out the game allowing two hits and striking out
three.
Arizona State will finish out the two game set against
seventh-ranked California tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
