Junior back Erin Robinson capped off an exciting overtime period for the Bears by punching in the winning goal against the visiting Tigers to give Cal the 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon.
California (1-0 overall, 1-0 in NorPac Conference) drew first blood as freshmen forward Nora Feddersen shot a penalty corner over the goalkeeper to give her squad the 1-0 lead and also her first goal in a Cal uniform.
Pacific (0-1 overall, 0-1 in NorPac Conference) quickly responded courtesy of junior midfielder Beth Vechinski tying it at 1-1, but California put the Tigers back on their heels as Lisa D'Anjou slapped in a short corner off the left side of the circle.
The sophomore forward continued her assault on the Tiger defense in the second half as D'Anjou put home a rebound off of a Stephanie Lyons' shot attempt to give the Bears a 3-1 advantage midway through the second half.
The Bears had a tough time putting away Pacific when the Tigers threatened with two unanswered goals. Cal's backfield of Alyssa Sprenger, Erin Robinson, and Leslie Katch held the opposition to 1 goal in the first 50 minutes of play, but as the game wore on, the overall inexperience of the defenders showed as Pacific kept the pressure on.
At the end regulation with the game dead-locked at 3-3, the two teams went to a 7-on-7, sudden victory format to decide the winner. After almost 12 minutes of intense competition, Erin Robinson made-up for any shortcomings of her defensive unit during the match as she slapped in the go-ahead goal to end the important conference match-up in thrilling fashion.
Cal now prepares to host Miami of Ohio on Sunday September 3rd and continue on into their nonconference schedule when they face-off against Northeastern at Stanford on September 8th.
