BERKELEY- The California men's soccer team earned their second win of the season in the 3-1 win over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. With the win, the Bears improve to 2-3 on the young season, while the Gauchos fall to 3-3.
"This was a great team effort today," coach Kevin Grimes said. "The players had to play on Friday and then travel on Saturday, and even though they were tired, they played well.
UCSB jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the third minute on a header by Gene Deering from a Joe Hubay-Dies cross.
That would all the scoring that the Gauchos would do for the rest of the contest. The Bears would score the next three goals of the game.
Junior Chris Roner shot in the 20th minute from 15 yards out and placed it perfectly in the bottom right corner of the net for the Bears first score in their last four games. Roner would add another score in the second half as he placed a free-kick 15 yards out, deep in the left corner of the goal.
Cal would put their final tally on the board in the 88th minute on a five-yard shot off the foot of freshman Omar Gusmao. Both Kendall Simmonds and Dylan Dupree picked up assists on the Gusmao score.
The boys deserved this victory today," said Grimes. "This game was won on heart and desire and I am proud of them."
Cal will hit the road again this weekend, as they compete in the Santa Clara Invitational. The Bears battle San Francisco on Thursday, at 2:00 p.m., and then against host Santa Clara on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
