BERKELEY- The California men's soccer team opened the 2000 season with a 4-0 shutout of UC Santa Cruz Saturday Sept. 2 at Edwards Stadium. This marks the first win for first year California head coach Kevin Grimes.
"Overall I am very pleased with the results this afternoon. Santa Cruz proved to be a formidable opponent. They forced our team to step up to get the win. It is nice to get the first win out of the way."
After having a goal erased due to an offsides call early in the first half, senior Kendall Simmonds took a pass from Ramiro Arredondo 22 minutes into the game and knocked a 12 yard ball deep to the far post for the first goal of the 2000 season. This was Simmonds first of two goals, as his second came nearly 50 minutes later for the fourth and final goal of the game.
Sandwiched in between Simmonds' two goals, were goals by Chris Roner, who's shot deflected off the goalies hands, and Arredondo's 20-yard blast to the left post ten minutes into the second half.
Cal Freshman Brian Walker spent his first game in goal for the Golden Bears and recorded his first shutout of his young collegiate career.
Cal's next match comes when they travel to Saint Louis for a tournament where they will battle Saint Louis on Sept. 8 and Louisville on Sept. 10.
