Berkeley, CA -
The California men's soccer team dropped their fourth match, and fall to 2-4 on the year, after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the visiting University of San Francisco Dons, as part of the Santa Clara Invitational Tournament. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Dons. They improve to 3-4-2 on the season.
The Golden Bears were forced to play the remaining 71 minutes of the game with a man-down, as keeper Marco Palmieri was issued a red card after a call of serious play. USF forward Gabe Sturm had a 1-v.-1 with Palmieri and was taken down before he had a chance to shoot. This resulted in the expulsion of Palmieri.
"Being down a man after 20 minutes made the game very difficult on our team, "said coach Kevin Grimes. "I thought that even with ten men for nearly 80 minutes, we still had a chance to win the game."
Cal's ten men on the field held the Dons without a score in the first half. With 14 minutes left in the match, forward Raji Ananda scored his first career goal for the Dons, on an unassisted 20 yard shot to the right post.
Cal senior Kendall Simmonds led the Bears with three shots. Tim Garlick, Bjorn Roden, Anthony Medina, Gabe Sturm, Andreas Stave and Tiberiu Marinescu led the Dons with two shots apiece.
Freshman Brian Walker recorded six saves for the Bears in replace of Palmieri. Don keeper Scott Spaulding only had one save in the match.
The Bears have now been shut out four time this season
Cal completes the Santa Clara Invitational this Saturday at 8 p.m. when they take on the host Santa Clara Broncos. Santa Clara's, Buck Shaw stadium is the site for Saturday's match.
