Sept. 23, 2000
Box Score
Santa Clara, CA -
Five different players scored goals, including three freshmen, as the Santa Clara men's soccer team exploded to a 5-0 win over California in the final game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Cal dropped to 2-5-0 with the loss, while Santa Clara improves to 5-2-0. In the first game, San Francisco won the event's title with a 1-0 win over Missouri-Kansas City.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead early in the game when sophomore Scott McLain headed-in a goal off an Anthony Chimienti assist at the 4:35 mark of the first half.
"It was a tale of two halves," said coach Kevin Grimes. "The first half was probably the best half that we have played all year, and the second half probably the worst."
The two teams played to a scoreless tie for the next 60:00 until Bronco freshman Phillip Johnson took advantage of a rebound off a Chimienti header to record his first goal of the season just 5:50 into the second half.
Chimienti scored the third goal for the Broncos with an acrobatic move between two defenders and the goalkeeper into an empty net off a Steve Millward assist. Chimienti also had two assists in the game. Freshmen Matt Upton and Audren Cashman added late goals for the Broncos.
The Bears were out shot in the match 13-7. Kendall Simmonds, Ramiro Arredondo and Patrick Fisher each took two shots for the Bears.
Arredondo and Chris Roner were named to the all-tournament team.
Cal continues play next weekend as they battle Cincinatti on Friday at 5 p.m., and Seton Hall on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Both matches are apart of the Stanford Invitational.
