BERKELEY - Cal won its second overtime game in as many games as the Bears beat Miami University 2-1 in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Kleeberger Field.

After being dubbed as a "natural" and the next Megan Sainsbury by coach Shellie Onstead, Elizabeth Harkins finally came through on the score sheet as she notched her first goal of the season and lifted the Bears to another exciting overtime win.

Harkins got through the seams of the Redhawk defense on numerous occasions throughout the game, tallying a team-leading 7 shots on goal. At 13:34 of the second OT, the junior forward's persistence paid-off as she launched a shot top shelf into the goal.

California (2-0) and Miami of Ohio (1-2) went end-to-end without any scoring until well into the second half when freshmen midfielder Nora Feddersen let a shot go from near the top of the circle and scored her second goal of the season at 19:51.

Miami of Ohio responded at 12:41 of the second period as freshmen forward Angela Snedden helped the Redhawks tie the game up at 1-1.

From there, the two teams played stingy defense as time was winding down in regulation. The Redhawks in particular played very aggressive defense. "They were playing real physical," said coach Onstead. "We handled it well and nobody got upset, which is key, no one was thrown off their game."

Indeed, Harkins and the rest of the Bears squad continued to grind it out with Miami's backfield. Lisa D'Anjou, who scored two goals last weekend against Pacific, worked the ball into the defense and dished to Harkins who saw daylight and put home the game winner.

Cal now prepares for a neutral sight game versus Northeastern at Stanford next Friday at 3:00 p.m. From there, the Bears head east, September 14-17, to Boston, MA, to play three games in four days against Harvard, Rhode Island and Boston University.
