Men's Soccer Drops Pac-10 Opener, 2-0, to UCLA

LOS ANGELES - California (6-4-1, 0-1-0) opened Pac-10 Conference play with a 2-0 loss to UCLA (5-4-2, 1-0-0) at Frank W. Marshall Field.

The Bruins' Adolfo Gregorio came off the bench to score a 39th minute goal from 18-yards out that gave UCLA the early advantage. The Bruins increased their lead in the 71st minute after freshman forward Phillip was fouled in the penalty area during a breakaway. Junior midfielder Ryan Futagaki scored on the ensuing penalty kick to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.

Cal's best scoring chance came at the 81:14 mark when senior forward Austin Ripmaster headed a shot towards the goal area, but Bruin goalkeeper Zach Wells made a one-handed grab to stop the shot. Wells made four saves in the game while picking up his fourth shutout of the year while counterpart Josh Saunders made five saves for the Bears.

Ripmaster led the Bears with two shots for the afternoon.

California has a week to prepare for cross-bay rival and second-ranked Stanford as it travels to the south bay for a Pac-10 conference game on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
