COLUMBUS, Ohio -
After dropping its first conference game in over two years and in danger of losing its third consecutive game for the first time since September 1998, No. 20 California needed something big to stop the mini-tailspin and gain momentum for the stretch run of conference play.
The Bears (7-4, 3-1) got that and much more as they defeated No. 10 Ohio State (10-3, 3-0), 5-4, in overtime Saturday afternoon at Woody Hayes Athletic Center North Field. It was Cal's first victory over a Top 25 opponent since Sept. 25, 1999, when the Bears defeated No. 11 Michigan State, 2-1.
The Buckeyes Marije van Nouhuys scored the first of three goals on the day at 13:53 of the first half. Cal came storming back 47 seconds later as sophomore midfielder Nora Feddersen notched an unassisted goal at 13:06 on her way to scoring three goals in a game for the first time in her career.
Unlike the defensive battle in the first half, the second half saw an offensive showcase by both teams as they combined for six goals. A little over two minutes into the final period, van Nouhuys tallied her second goal on the afternoon with an assist from Lorena Margni and Jenee Doto.
Not to be out done, Feddersen responded with the equalizer at 12:52 of the second half to knot the score at 2-2.
Junior Elizbeth Harkins joined the scoring barrage as she put the Bears up, 3-2, at 7:00. The Buckeyes responded with a goal of their own, when Lorena Margni scored at 2:53.
What looked like a victory, suddenly appeared to be a heart-breaking loss for the Bears as van Nouhuys tallied her third goal of the day to put OSU up, 4-3 with 2:41 remaining in the game.
But with 34 seconds left in the contest, and the Buckeyes looking to burn off the rest of the clock, Harkins got a hold of the ball and put it home for the fourth tie of the game. The forward's second goal of the game and eighth of the season pushed the game into overtime where Nora Feddersen scored on a penalty corner at 13:02 of OT to give the Bears the upset win over OSU.
The Buckeyes outshot Cal, 27-10, and dominated corner opportunities by a whopping margin of 20-6. The Bears' goalkeeper Emily Rowlen made nine saves for her sixth win of the season.
Cal wraps up its Ohio road trip against Wittenberg in a neutral site matchup, Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST) at Woody Hayes Athletic Center North Field.
