Stanford, CA - The fifth-ranked Cal men's water polo team (8-2) finished in fifth place this weekend at the Stanford-hosted NorCal tournament.

After getting off to a quick start in Saturday's games by cruising to a 10-6 victory over Cal Baptist, Cal fell to third-ranked Pepperdine, 7-5. Tim Kates and Russell Bernstein combined for 10 saves betweem them and Attila Banhidy put up three goals, but a strong third period from Pepperdine did them in, ending the Bears' championship bid.

On Sunday, Cal throttled UC Irvine by a 11-4 mark. Russell Bernstein put up a massive 15 saves to aid the Bears, who were also helped by a balanced scoring attack, led by Spencer Dorin (three goals) and Chris Lathrop and Attila Banhidy, who scored two each.

In the fifth place consolation game, Cal once again shined, earning a 13-7 decision over Long Beach State. Banhidy put up a huge four goals, and Bernstein once again came up large, adding 10 saves for the game.

Banhidy was Cal's leading scorer on the weekend, putting the ball in the net 11 times.

The Bears are back in action next weekend in Los Angeles against UCLA on Saturday and Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Cal returns home on November 3 to rematch Long Beach State.

NOTES: This year, Berkeley will play host to the MPSF tournament, which will take place on Thanksgiving weekend. Game times and matchups to be announced.
