Irvine, CA -
Junior Andrew Stoddard scored an extra-man goal with 54 seconds remaining to lift fifth-ranked California over No. 7 UC Irvine, 7-6, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine Friday night.
The Anteaters had tied the game at 6-6 on a goal by sophomore Garrett Gentry with 1:18 left, but the Golden Bears then converted the power-play opportunity. Cal's Chris Lathrop made a key steal with 36 seconds left in the game to thwart UCI's final offensive chance.
The Bears led 3-1 after the first quarter, but the Anteaters managed to pull even three times, all on goals by Gentry, before Stoddard's game-winning goal. Gentry had tied the game at 5-5 with 5:08 remaining, but Lathrop scored to give Cal a 6-5 lead with 1:33 left before Gentry and Stoddard traded goals at the end.
Cal was 4 of 4 on extra-man situations in the game and UCI converted its only power-play attempt. Sophomore Attila Banhidy led the Bears with two goals, while senior Chris Kirchwehm scored two for UCI to support Gentry's hat trick.
The University of California will play host to the annual Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 23-25. The MPSF is host to many of the nation's top water polo teams, and all will compete at the Spieker Aquatics Complex on Cal's campus. Tickets for adults are $25 for the three day tournament, and $10 purchased daily. For students, seniors and children, tickets will run $13 for the weekend, and $5 daily.
