BOONE, N.C. - No. 4 seed Davidson (5-13) gave No. 1 California (11-4) a scare as the Wildcats pushed the 17th-ranked Golden Bears into double overtime. Sara Hunt's goal at 7:14 rescued Cal from an upset-minded Davidson squad for a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon in the NorPac Postseason Tournament at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the Appalachian State campus.

In the opening period, junior back Michelle Wald scored her first goal of the season at 16:37 beating out a Davidson defender and redirecting a stray pass to give the Bears the early lead.

"(Elizabeth Harkins) just dumped it over to me and I dribble it in," said Wald. "We had two-on-nothing on the goalie and a defender was closing in so I went further in towards the goal and shot it."

With just 31 seconds remaining in the first period, Danya Sawyer tapped in a rebound off a corner shot taken by Nora Feddersen to put the Bears up, 2-0.

Not to be outdone, Davidson came charging back after the intermission with two quick goals. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Wildcats' Amanda Strickland scored to put her team on the board at 13:28.

A minute and a half later, the Wildcats scored on a penalty corner as Kathleen Fenn belted a shot from 15 yards out, for the equalizer.

At 25:46, the Bears regained the lead as senior Erin Robinson scored on a corner with assists from Sara Hunt and Wald.

The same assist duo set up the next Cal goal, as this time, Nora Feddersen connected on a Bear penalty corner with 19:38 left in regulation for sophomore's team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Forward Strickland completed a hat trick for the Wildcats with two more goals. Her second score of the game came at 13:49 in regulation as Elizabeth Schoening set her up on a corner. The same scoring combination evened up the score for the second time in the game as Strickland scored with three minutes to go in the contest.

The Bears had a prime opportunity in the first overtime as Feddersen setup a streaking Elizabeth Harkins, who slipped by all defenders, with a through ball. The NorPac Conference scoring-leader had Davidson keeper Cate Schenning, one-on-one, but was unable to convert as the freshman netminder gambled and coming out of the goal area and stacking her pads for the save.

Cal's unblemished overtime (4-0) stayed intact, though, as senior Sara Hunt one-timed a Feddersen pass on the Bears' 11th corner of the day in double overtime.

"I think Davidson played a good game," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "I've got to give them credit for keep coming back and I just feel like our team had, I guess, our first collective bad day. We had a hard time getting on track."

Hunt and Wald both shined as each player had one goal and a pair of assists on the afternoon.

"We did not play a good game at all, but we pulled through and just picked it up when we had to," said Wald.

Davidson's first goal marked the first time Cal had allowed a goal in 270 minutes of play, spanning five games. The Bears extended their winning streak to a season-high four games.

Cal advances to the second round of the NorPac Postseason Tournament, facing the winner of the Pacific-Appalachian State matchup later tonight. The Bears play the winner tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
