No. 5 Softball Advances To Second Round Of Gold Bracket At NFCA Leadoff Championships With Win Over No. 6 LSU, 3-0

The No. 5 ranked and No. 2 seed California Golden Bears defeated the No. 6 ranked and No. 7 seed Louisiana State Tigers, 3-0, in the first round of the championship gold bracket of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Bears defeated Long Island earlier in the day, 7-1 to advance to the championship gold bracket. On Friday, Cal defeated No. 10 rank DePaul, 1-0, and No. 15 rank Nebraska, 2-1.
Cal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a sophomore Veronica Nelson blast well over the 220-foot center field fence, bringing in senior Pauline Due?as who drew a walk earlier in the inning to give the Bears the early two-run lead.
The game remained 2-0 until the Cal half of the sixth when Nelson led off the inning with a single to right field. Freshman Danielle Setiawan came in to run for Nelson and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Candace Harper. Setiawan moved to third on a wild pitch and came in to score the Bears third run on a single to center by senior Amber Phillips.
Junior Jocelyn Forest went the distance for Cal, allowing and no runs and a single hit in the third inning for the Tigers, while striking out a season-high 15 LSU batters. She improves to 6-0 on the year and lowers her team-leading ERA to 0.68.
The Bears return to action tomorrow, Feb. 25 when they face No. 4 Alabama, who defeated Michigan, 1-0 in the same first round championship bracket. Game time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. EST.
