VILLANOVA, Penn. -
California topped-off its east coast spring break road trip with a 9-8 victory over Villanova Sunday afternoon in a hard fought contest at Villanova Stadium. Freshman midfielder Julianne Wu led the Bears with four goals and an assist, including the game-tying goal with 7:18 remaining on the clock.
Freshman midfielder Carley Preble scored first, just 1:15 into the game on an assist from senior midfielder Alana Dunnigan. The two teams would go on to exchange goals for the remainder of the half, leading to a 4-4 halftime tally.
After each team scored early in the second half, California came up with a three goal burst from Wu, junior attacker Laura Kado and Wu again, on an assist from sophomore midfielder Jessie Liu, to build an 8-5 cushion for the Bears with 7:18 remaining in the half. Two Wildcat goals brought Villanova to within one, 8-7, at the 4:17 mark, before senior midfielder Sarah Wheatley gave the Bears a 9-7 lead with 2:28 remaining in the game. That would prove to be enough as Villanova could manage only one more goal before the final buzzer.
California returns to Western Women's Lacrosse League action this week, traveling to Stanford on Saturday, April 7, to take on the Cardinal at 1:00 p.m.
