Field Hockey Tops Delaware, 2-1

STANFORD, Calif. - California (1-1) rebounded from a tough loss versus No. 3 Maryland last Saturday to knock off previously unbeaten Delaware (2-1) with a 2-1 overtime victory Tuesday afternoon at Stanford's Varsity Field Hockey Turf.

The Bears' Elizabeth Harkins notched the game-winning goal with 9:49 to go in the first "sudden victory" overtime period, scoring during a 2-on-1 breakaway with an assist from Amber Stockstill.

Cal trailed earlier in the game, 1-0, after Delaware's Juli Byrd broke the ice with 30:39 to go in the contest on an assist from Jessi Balmer. The Bears tied the contest at 1-1 when Erin Robinson scored the Bears' first goal of the season with assists from Danya Sawyers and Harkins on a direct corner with 24:13 to go.

Delaware edged Cal in shots, 12-10, while California goalkeeper Emily Rowlen picked up a game-high six saves in a winning effort.

For the second consecutive season, the Bears won their first game of the season in overtime. In 2000, Cal won its first two games in extra sessions edging out Pacific, 4-3, in overtime and pulling out a 2-1 win versus Miami of Ohio in double overtime.

The Bears try to notch their second win of the season Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.at Kleeberger Field.
