Berkeley -
Cal men's water polo pulled off a 4th overtime victory today over the visiting
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, winning on a Joe Kaiser goal by a mark of 7-6 in Berkeley.
Kaiser, who entered the game as Cal's leading scorer with four goals against Pacific
two weeks ago, drilled the game winner past UCSB's Trevor Spence after a quick steal
with 1:08 remaining in the 4th overtime period. In water polo, overtime is sudden death
begining with the 3rd overtime period.
Cal jumped off to an early lead, 1-0, on a backhanded shot by senior two-meter man
Mike West. The Gauchos and the Bears would trade goals for the rest of the period,
and Cal ended the period in the lead 3-2.
The Gauchos put together two goals by Patrick Tremain and Tom Coughlan in the
second and held Cal scoreles until the third. Spence Dorin broke the Bears' scoring
freeze and Chris Lathrop put away a goal on a breakaway late in the period, and UCSB
and Cal entered the 4th period knoted up at 5. Sophomore Tim Kates, who came in at
the beginning of the second half, had four saves on the period.
Neither team would score in the 4th period or the firt overtime. Mark Welch scored for
UCSB at the beginning of the second overtime period, but it was quickly answered by
Cal, with West's third goal on the day, forcing the fourth overtime period.
Kates, who played nearly 25 minutes despite entering the game in the third period, led
all goalies with 9 saves. For UCSB, goalie Spence had 4 saves. Joey Pacelli and
Coughlan had two goals apiece.
