Field Hockey Downs Saint Louis, 5-3, in Conference Opener
Sept. 6, 2001
FENTON, Mo. -
California (3-1) opened up its conference schedule with a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Saint Louis (0-4) Thursday afternoon at Anheuser-Busch Center. It was a battle of wits between two forwards on opposing teams.
The Bears opened the scoring with 26:30 left in the first half as Lisa D'Anjou netted her first score of the season unassisted. The Billikens' Keri Brunner answered back with 25:25 left on the clock with her own unassisted goal. D'Anjou retaliated with her second of the day with 8:23 remaining in the half.
The Bills turned up the heat and Brunner, with an assist from senior back Heather Mattingly, netted her second goal of the half. From there, it looked like a Saint Louis team that hadn't scored in their previous three games, could prevail. Mattingly put the Bills up by one when the senior received an assist from fellow senior Sue Albers for the third Billiken goal of the half.
Just as Brunner received some scoring help from her SLU teammates, so did D'Anjou. The NorPac conference champs from 2000 then reeled off three unanswered second-half goals to take the victory over Saint Louis.
Elizabeth Harkins, who has been on a torrid scoring pace of late, scored two goals bringing her season total to five. The first goal was assisted by Amber Stockstill and the second score was unassisted with the two scores coming just five minutes apart. Erin Booth then fired in the final goal of the match, her first of the season, with 19:41 left to play.
Cal improves to 1-0 in conference play while Saint Louis drops to 0-1.
Cal will meet Dartmouth on Fri., Sept. 7, at 2 p.m., followed by Saint Louis' match with Miami (OH) at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, Mo.
