The California field hockey team exploded this afternoon at Maxwell Family Field, dominating its game against NorPac foe St. Louis, for a final score of 7-1. The win was a true team effort, receiving goals from six different players. With the win, the Golden Bears remain undefeated in conference play (4-0) and improve to 9-6 overall, as the Billikens fall to 1-14 (0-6 NorPac)
Junior Nora Feddersen gave Cal the early lead, scoring her first of two goals for the day in the 14th minute. On the second goal, Danya Sawyer passed the ball into Pooja Mehta, who stick stopped the ball for an awaiting Anita Reyes who cranked the ball past Billliken goalkeeper, Julie Moeckel.
Three minutes later the Bears responded with another goal by Feddersen, her team-leading eight of the year, to finish the first half at 3-0.
It took Cal only eight and a half minutes into the second stanza to score again as freshman Alexandra Harkins dribbled the ball into the circle and blasted her first collegiate goal into the cage. The Bears increased their lead off of a well executed penalty corner in the 48th minute, as senior Stephanie Lyons notched her second goal of the year, assisted by Danya Sawyer and Mehta.
The day was full of firsts, as freshmen Jessica Bird and Kiely Schmidt collected their first collegiate goals in the 62nd and 64th minute respectively. Bird's shot was assisted by Feddersen as Schmidt's came off of a penalty stroke.
The Billikens fought back with less than a minute remaining in the game, as Carin Boone fired a shot past Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp to end the shutout and put St. Louis on the board.
Knapp made two saves in the win as Moeckel collected eight in the effort. The Bears were led offensively by Feddersen's seven shots, while the Billikens were paced by Ellen Rapp's two shots.
Cal return to action Saturday, Oct. 26, hosting Pacific at Maxwell Family Field at 1 p.m. for it's second to last scheduled NorPac game.
